Drawings throughout. Diary begun, Apr. 3, 1849, on journey to California as a member of the Fremont Association of New York. Landing at Galveston from the ship, Benjamin R. Milam, the party proceeded overland via the Tucson cut-off. Subsequent volumes record life in the Southern mines; experiences as a member of Major Savage's Mariposa Battalion which visited Yosemite Valley during the Indian uprising (1851); trip to Hannibal, Mo., via Nicaragua and New Orleans, to purchase sheep and return to California, overland (1853); life at Garden Ranch near Forbestown, Butte Co. (1855); trip to New York via Panama and return via Nicaragua (1856). Biographical notes, supplied by Mrs. Ethel Baird Eccleston, and supplementary material assembled for publication of the 1849 overland diary by George P. Hammond and Edward H. Howes, included.
